Michael Cass, J.D., CPCU, ARe, ARM, has been involved in the insurance and reinsurance field for 40 years, 38 of which has involved reinsurance, predominantly in the area of reinsurance underwriting.
Today, Mr. Cass is President & Principal consultant for R.M. Cass Associates, an independent consulting firm located in Chicago. Formed in 1987 in Barrington, Illinois, Mr. Cass specializes in reinsurance issues, reinsurance contract wordings, and related matters.
Mr. Cass is a graduate of Penn State University and Temple University School of Law. He is a member of the New York Bar and the American Arbitration Association’s Panel of Neutrals.
Prior to forming his consulting practice, Mr. Cass spent approximately 20 years working for several insurance and reinsurance companies with responsibilities in various operational areas. He was initially employed with Employers of Boston (Commercial Union) gaining experience in primary underwriting and marketing. From 1970 to 1986 he was both manager and officer for three reinsurance companies including National Re, Skandia America Re and the Allstate Reinsurance Division, with responsibility for contract drafting, underwriting, claims and administration. In the year prior to forming his consulting practice, Mr. Cass was employed with R.K. Carvill, a U.K. based reinsurance broker.
Mr. Cass is past chairman of the CPCU Society’s Risk Management Section Committee and the Reinsurance Section Committee. He presently serves on the Associate in Reinsurance Advisory Committee for the Insurance Institute of America.
Mr. Cass is a member of the American Bar Association’s Tort, Trial & Insurance Practice Section and a former chair of its Excess, Surplus Lines and Reinsurance Committee and its International Committee.
Mr. Cass has served as an arbitrator in approximately 60 insurance and reinsurance disputes.
He is an ARIAS–U.S. certified arbitrator and umpire.
